In the late 1940s and early 1950s, one of the controversies roiling America was the “Who Lost China” question. After Mao’s Communists took power there in 1949, Republicans—and not only Joe McCarthy—continually alleged that this was all the fault of President Harry Truman and his feckless diplomats, and that some of those diplomats were actually pro-Communist. (In the case of Alger Hiss, this was actually true, but Hiss had no connection to any U.S. policy outcomes, in China or anyplace else). Europe and Asia have stopped flying the Boeing 737 MAX 8, but it still soars overhead in the good old USA, rattling the confidence of air passengers from Maine to California. Donald and Bibi’s Tin-Pot International

It’s been a busy international relations week for the Western World’s two leading wannabe autocrats, U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump’s Veep, Mike Pence, met with stony silence when he told a gathering of Western European officials in Munich that they should join the U.S. in repudiating the multi-national agreement with Iran, which lifted trade sanctions with that nation in return for its ceasing to develop nuclear weapons. Our traditional European allies haven’t abandoned that agreement, since Iran appears to be living up to its end of the bargain.
